It seems I have been doing tree work all my life. My dad, working as
a logger on the side of pastoring a church, gave me plenty of opportunity to
handle a saw and break me of any "fear" was as I walked out on a
limb...literally. We lived in the Mountains of Western North Carolina and I moved to
Raleigh to attend North Carolina State University. I worked in trees while I was going to school
and then married my best friend, Rebecca, from the mountains where I grew
up. She moved to Raleigh with me and Little Squirrels began.
Newly married and young, we began to
seek God and to figure out what we really wanted to do with our
lives. I
always wanted my own business and she enjoyed decorating the house and
wanted children. I sold the motorcycle I had and bought a red 78
Ford pick up truck. It was ugly and old and I had to put a quart of oil in it
each day. We built 4 ft sides on it with plywood. Did I
mention it was ugly? Rebecca made flyers and we drove around handing
them out and posting them everywhere we could find. It worked!
We received many calls and we were on our way. About our name... Business was really picking up and we
had yet to decide on a name. We were driving around in old Red and
brainstormed for ideas. We needed something that people would remember and enjoy.
Little Squirrels was the final pick since Rebecca
thought I looked like a little squirrel when I climbed up and down trees
for our customers. Later the name would really fit since we were
able to save a total of 14 baby squirrels we found nested in trees I
cut. Rebecca raised them and then let them back into the wild.
These squirrels would have surely died. Little Squirrels Tree Service took off here in the
Raleigh area and we quickly grew and were blessed. Since old Red I
have upgraded truck by truck and now we have just purchased a brand new
truck in addition to the
chipper and wood truck we already owned. We home-school our AWESOME
children. We have a daughter, Skye,
who is in the fourth grade and her little brother stone, is going into
first grade. Rebecca stays home and she’s the
person you talk to when you call us. We enjoy meeting new customers and
always try to make each job as if we were working in our own yard.
We look back on these short few years and see how
the hand of God has been upon us. Who would know 2 kids moving to the city with
only their faith and a motorcycle would be where they are today. And the
reason why the desires of our hearts were fulfilled is because we always
saw Little Squirrels Tree Service as HIS, not ours. Everything we receive
from it, we always give back to HIM unselfishly. We are very thankful. Travis, Beckie, Skye and Stone |
