For the last several years, North Carolina has experienced many severe thunderstorms, ice storms and hurricanes. For several weeks, we were busy removing trees from roofs, pools, and vehicles. Unfortunately, the property damage costs far exceeded preventative maintenance. Measures can be taken to prepare trees for natural disasters but they must be done well in advance of stormy seasons.

When trees are subjected to high winds, ice buildup or heavy snows, the limbs flex often in opposite directions, which can result in a splitting stress. Trees that are most likely to cause damage are those with limbs too massive for their trunks, tree with co-dominant or multiple stems, aging specimens requiring special support, and trees overhanging buildings. Additionally, trees that have not been pruned regularly or properly are more susceptible to storm damage.
